Schools will provide help and support to make sure students are on track for reading success by the end of third grade. Counselors Remember the Five C’s of Discipline There is an easy way to remember the important parts of discipline: all begin with the letter “c.” They include clarity, consistency, consequences, caring, and change. Here’s what each involves: Clarity – Children need to understand rules in order to follow them. The best rules are short and specific. For example, “Say please” is better than “Be polite.” Consistency – Exceptions to rules confuse kids. But when parents always enforce good rules, kids know they should always obey. Consequences – It helps children see the results of their actions. For example, a child who learns a new skill will enjoy success and praise. A child who says something unkind may upset a friend. Caring – Discipline works best when it’s done with love. Parents should provide rules, responsibilities, and consequences to teach children – not punish them. Change – Kids change as they grow, and so should parents’ discipline methods. For example, your child may be ready to pick up all of her toys instead of just a few. Or she may need more praise as she learns a new skill. Adjusting discipline to your child’s abilities will make things easier for both of you.
